Cutting Cords

To move forward on your grief journey, you have to find ways to let go of negative emotions, events and people. Letting go helps your heart to heal. Healing your heart helps you to feel joy again. But letting go also requires you to take an honest look at your life. This isn’t easy. You must take responsibility and accept only you can fix it. You must be committed to taking the action steps toward breaking the cycle, and begin the healing process. Step-by-step. Relationship-by-relationship. Emotion-by-emotion. Situation-by-situation. Once you have taken that first step, you can move forward with a different outlook.


When we connect with our emotions, events or other people, we form an energetic connection or cord with them.  Sometimes the energy is healthy and other times, the energy drain us in negative ways.  The process of “cutting cords” helps to release these negative emotions, events and people from your life. If the negative emotion is associated with a particular person (living or deceased), you can also visualize cutting cords with that person when doing this activity. This doesn’t mean that you don’t care for or love the person any less, it just means you letting go of any unhealthy or dysfunctional attachments you have (or have had with this person).  It also means you are establishing healthy boundaries for yourself. You are setting yourself free emotionally, spiritually and energetically.


Sit in a comfortable position or chair.

Close your eyes.

Breathe in for 5 counts.

Breathe out for 5 counts.

Feel your body start to relax.

Visualize yourself surrounded by white light.

Now imagine the emotion you want to release.

Surround it in white light.

Visualize yourself and the emotion together.

See the cords that connect you.

You now know why it is important to cut these cords.

Imagine Archangel Michael with his protective sword.

Ask Archangel Michael to use his sword to cut the cords between you and the emotion.

As the cord is cut, feel the release of the emotion as it floats away.

Ask Archangel Michael to continue to cut the cords that connect you to any remaining emotions until they have all floated away.

Feel yourself filling with a sense of peace.

Thank Archangel Michael for cutting these cords and releasing you from these emotions.

Slowly open your eyes.

Give thanks.

Memory Teee

Memory Tree

A memory tree is a great way to remember your loved one. We created a memory tree for my Dad’s recent Memorial service. It gave family members and friends an opportunity to share something they remembered about my Dad. Reading the memory cards after the service was such a special gift to my family. You can also re-read the memories on special occasions or whenever you need something uplifting. This can be very healing for everyone involved.


Tree branch (or substitute a small Christmas or a table-top tree).

Gift tags, 3×5” cards, etc. (memory cards).

Single hole punch.


Place the tree branch inside the vase.

Use the moss to stabilize the tree branch inside the vase.

Cut the memorial cards into whatever shape best suits the size of the tree branch. Examples include: heart, square, rectangle, circle, star, dove, favorite sport (golf ball, soccer ball, etc.).

Leave enough space to write a few sentences on the memory card.

Punch a hole in the corner of each memory card.

Tie a ribbon through the hole in each memory card.

Ask family, friends, guests to write down their favorite memory on one of the cards.

Tie the memory card to the tree branch.

Memory cards can continue to be added to the tree at any time.
