10 Items For Your Grief Kit

Tags :

Living in Southern California, it is understood we need to have an Earthquake Kit available for our autos and homes.  This made me think about creating a Grief Kit when I was grieving the loss of my loved ones. I found that having items in a Grief Kit really lifted my spirits and helped me to move through my grief.  It’s easy to make. Collect any of the following items, place them in a basket and keep them close by for when you may need them.

ITEMS FOR YOUR GRIEF KIT

Coloring Book (with pencils/crayons) – Adult coloring books are great for stress reduction.  Focusing on coloring intricate pictures can give us a much-needed break from our grief.

Favorite Music – Music is so important in helping us get through our grief. Listening to your loved one’s favorite song or piece of music can provide solace, even if it is only for a short moment. Whether these memories make you feel happy or sad, either way, it is okay. Don’t push them away. Let them come to the surface and honor them.

Favorite Movie (Sad or Funny) – Sometimes getting lost in a sad movie is the best medicine for your grief. It can give you an excuse to cry everything out.  Sometimes getting lost in a funny movie is the best medicine. It gives you a break by offering a good laugh, which can also be very healing.

Scented Candle – Aromatherapy balances, harmonizes and promotes your emotional, physical and spiritual health. They are especially helpful when you are grieving since they can bring a sense of calm.  Burning a lavender, sandalwood, lemon, cinnamon or rose-scented candles can help with grief.

Favorite Book – Read a favorite book. One that brings you hope or inspiration.  One of my favorites is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho which is a wonderful story of Santiago, a shepherd, whose  journey teaches us about listening to our hearts and following our dreams.

Grief-Related Book – Books about grief can also be very healing.  One of our friends in grief, Robin Chodak wrote a beautiful book, Be Gentle with Me, I am Grieving. Robin’s book is a testimony that it is possible to live and love life again after loss.

Crystals – There are corresponding crystals for each of your energy centers. Each crystal has a specific healing property. They conduct and amplify energy to help balance and heal specific emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of our lives. Grief and sadness are related to your fourth or heart chakra. Apache tears, rose quartz, smokey quartz or sodalite can help you when you are grieving. They can be worn, kept in your pocket, placed under your pillow, added to your bathing routine, or placed around your house.

Journal – Thoughts may be going around and around in your head while you are grieving. Sometimes it is hard to talk about them. Other times, you want to talk about them, but family and friends don’t know how to help you. Writing your thoughts down in a journal is one way to get these thoughts out of your head. Sometimes once you start writing, the floodgates open.

Sea-Salts – Water therapy, a combination of bath salts and water can be very therapeutic. Soaking in a tub with Sea Salts when you are grieving can decrease stress, minimize insomnia, and relieve any aches and pains you may be experiencing.

Stress Ball – Squeezing a stress ball helps to release the energy that builds up as a result of you grief.

Items Needed In Every Grief Kit:

Tissue – Just remembering crying shows you are human and helps to move you through your grief.

Tylenol or Advil – Physical symptoms are not uncommon when you are grieving. Trying to “tough it out” can only make you feel worse.

Favorite Fruit –  Grief makes it tougher to fight disease. If eat fruits, we can boost our immune system. Great sources are citrus fruits.

Water Bottle – This is a no brainer. Water carries nutrients to your cells, flushes bacteria from your system, and prevents dehydration. You need at least four to six eight-ounce glasses of water a day to stay healthy. You can also get water from such foods as watermelon and lettuce.

You Can Also Throw These In But With Moderation:

Favorite Snack – Healthy snacks are best but if you want something decadent, make sure it is in smaller quantities.

Favorite Candy – Just a small piece of dark chocolate can reduce stress hormones and improve circulation. Stick with the kind that contains at least seventy percent cocoa to receive the maximum benefits.

REIKI ACTIVITY WHEN FEELING ILL

Reiki is very beneficial when you are not feeling well. You can send Reiki to the part of your body that is feeling ill or is out of sorts. For example, when I had a cold, I sent Reiki to my head to stop my nose from running and to minimize my headache. It was amazing how much better I felt after just a few hours. You can repeat this activity as needed.

Sit in a comfortable position or chair. Close your eyes.

Breathe in for 5 counts. Breathe out for 5 counts.

Feel your body start to relax.

Focus on the part(s) of your body that feels ill.

Place your hands over the affected part(s), and send Reiki energy.

Say “I am healthy and my energy is balanced.”

Breathe in for 5 counts. Breathe out for 5 counts.

Slowly open your eyes.

Give thanks.

Reminder: Reiki is not a replacement for traditional medical treatment.
